How many women get an abortion because of health concerns?
Posted by admin on Nov 29, 2009
I am just wondering if anyone has the statistics for what percent of women who get an abortion do so out of fear for their own health. Since it seems to be the major reason people support procedures like partial-birth abortion, I would think there should be a large amount of women who have the procedure out of health concerns to justify their support.
This report reviews available statistics regarding reasons given for obtaining abortions in the United States, including surveys by the Alan Guttmacher Institute and data from seven state health/statistics agencies that report relevant statistics (Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Utah). The official data imply that AGI claims regarding "hard case" abortions are inflated by roughly a factor of three. Actual percentage of U.S. abortions in "hard cases" are estimated as follows: in cases of rape or incest, 0.3%; in cases of risk to maternal health or life, 1%; and in cases of fetal abnormality, 0.5%. About 98% of abortions in the United States are elective, including socio-economic reasons or for birth control. This includes about 25% for primarily economic reasons

most do.
they are concerned that the baby will be healthy and will have to raise it.
Ouch!

A valid health concern is to save the mother’s life. It would not surprise me, however, if many will try to cry "health concern" like people will use "medical marijuana" as an excuse to smoke it up.
In any event, that might happen if we restore our country to sound law, to prevent people from getting drive-through abortions for convenience after the CHOICE to have voluntary sex was already made.

good question, but i would phrase it differently. by health concerns do you mean specific circumstances of the mother’s life being in danger? "fear for their own health", and "health concerns" – do you mean their own fears, or doctors telling them their lives are in danger?

Dr. Martin Haskell — the man who pioneered and has performed at least a thousand late-term abortions stated the following:
"I’ll be quite frank: most of my abortions are elective in that 20-24 week range. . . . In my particular case, probably 20% are for genetic reasons. And the other 80% are purely elective."

It is a very low %. Lib’s claim it is the policy of Government controlling their body that is the issue, but at the heart of this issue is the life of a child.

stoney–So you agree that abortion is murder. Just because it is legal doesnt make it right.
Why does the number of cases matter? If such a procedure were the only way you could live and the life of the unborn couldn’t be guaranteed, you would willingly die, is that it?
Why should the government be able to intervene in a private matter between a woman and her doctor? How is the government more qualified than someone who went to medical school?
In the US people are murdered every day and over half go unsolved. Do you think God is going to punish us for not catching the murderers in unsolved cases? Judgment is mine sayeth the Lord and when those who’ve aborted their children pass on from this life, He and HE ALONE will decide their fate. We will not be judged for another’s sin. If you believe otherwise, then we should be passing laws against adultery and punishing the guilty. In which case, a couple of the leading presidential candidates will have to remove themselves from the race.

Considerably more than the number of women who get an abortion to provide stem cells for scientific research, which seems to be the primary concern of the Neo-Cons…

I think the only concern that is usually addressed is the impact it will have on their lifestyle. Why face responsibility when you can kill it?
Hello… If 3700 abortions are happening each day, doesn’t the rants and raves of the pro-abortionist who decry the war sound hollow? They kill more in one day than we’ve lost in 4 years at war, and if you add up every day for the last four years, that will more than cover the civilian population lost. Selective outrage is just as irresponsible as abortion.
